Reinforcing steel weight.

From the nominal diameter: mass per metre = 0.006165 × d² kg/m, with d in millimetres. The constant comes from a steel density of 7,850 kg/m³. A 16 mm bar is 0.006165 × 16² = 1.578 kg/m, so a 12 m bar weighs about 18.94 kg.

Divide 1,000 kg by the weight of one bar. For 16 mm at 12 m that is 1,000 ÷ 18.94, about 52.8 bars. Enter a tonnage in the calculator and it gives the number of bars directly.

The calculator gives the nominal weight. A mill delivers inside the tolerance band of the governing standard, so the weighed steel can sit a little above or below the nominal figure and still comply. Where it falls inside that band is a commercial question, which is why the tolerance belongs in the contract.
